The world around us is a treasure trove of history, culture, and architectural wonders. It's a symphony of stories, each told through the buildings, monuments, and artefacts that have stood the test of time. But how do we ensure that these legacies remain intact for generations to come? That's where restoration, preservation, and conservation come into play. These three distinct approaches to safeguarding our heritage offer fascinating insights into the art of preserving the past. 

Restoration: Breathing Life into the Past

Imagine an ancient castle, its walls weathered by centuries of rain and wind. Restoration is the magic wand that brings it back to life. But there's a twist—restoration isn't about replicating the past exactly. It's about using materials that may not be from the same time period or of different compositions, while still capturing the essence of the original structure. In essence, it's a delicate dance between the old and the new.

Restoration often involves meticulous research, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for historical aesthetics.  Creating Sustainable Designs: Preserving Ancient Structures with Eco-Friendly Materials

When it comes to designing spaces that respect the client's vision, understanding their requirements is crucial. In our recent presentation, our team focused on precisely that adhering to our client's needs and preferences. To achieve this, we delved into extensive research about our client, Deniz, her design style, and the various design processes she employs. We discovered that Deniz's passion lies in conservation and restoration projects, where the objective is to preserve the inherent beauty of ancient structures while incorporating minimal design interventions.

Our foremost goal was to conceive designs that magnified the original allure of the ancient structure. Rather than overshadowing it, we aimed to highlight its remarkable features. This approach required us to carefully consider the materials that were originally used in constructing the building. During our research, we found that lime played a significant role in the construction process. This discovery led us to explore the unique properties and benefits of using lime as a key ingredient in our design.

When pondering sustainable factors, we encountered a startling fact: cement factories emitted more carbon monoxide than all the vehicles on the planet combined. Although cement offered advantages such as reduced labor costs and rapid setting, we recognized the need to explore eco-friendly alternatives. Lime emerged as a natural substance with inherent sustainability and eco-friendliness. However, we acknowledged that lime preparation required an extensive two-month period before it could be applied. Despite this challenge, we were motivated by the exceptional construction properties of lime, including its self-healing capabilities and its ability to absorb toxins from the air.

Given the superior properties of lime and our commitment to sustainability, we decided to make it a fundamental ingredient in our design. Additionally, we explored the use of fabric as a structural material, further enhancing the eco-friendly nature of our space. By combining lime and fabric, we sought to create a harmonious and sustainable design that preserved the integrity of the ancient structure without causing harm or obstruction.

In our approach, we also prioritized adaptability and future-proofing. We aimed to ensure that our design could be easily converted and open to upgrades as time progressed. This forward-thinking perspective allowed us to create a space that would continue to serve its purpose while accommodating any future changes or advancements.

In our quest to meet our client's requirements, we embraced the essence of her conservation and restoration projects. By carefully studying the ancient structure, incorporating lime as a natural and sustainable material, and utilizing fabric for structural purposes, we designed a space that showcased the existing beauty while minimizing interventions. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that the design stands the test of time and contributes positively to the environment. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to creating innovative and eco-friendly designs that preserve the past while embracing the future.

 Exploring Portsmouth's Historical Dockyard: A Journey of Discovery and Re-discovery

In anticipation of our upcoming meeting with Deniz, we eagerly prepared a series of thought-provoking questions revolving around the intriguing storehouse. We were determined to delve deep into its history and significance within the context of Portsmouth and its integral role in shaping the United Kingdom as we know it today.

Days prior to our meeting, we embarked on an immersive background study, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Portsmouth's past. From its humble beginnings as a small Roman settlement to its transformation into a bustling naval base during the Elizabethan era, we uncovered the city's pivotal role in maritime history. Portsmouth's connection to the dockyard became apparent, as we learned about its strategic importance in safeguarding the nation's interests and facilitating extensive trade networks.

Finally, the day arrived, and with great anticipation, we set foot in the historic dockyard, ready to absorb its grandeur. Deniz, our knowledgeable guide and curator, welcomed us with open arms. Her passion for history was evident as she led us on a captivating journey through time, unraveling the secrets of the storehouse.

As we walked alongside Deniz, she expertly addressed each of our meticulously prepared questions, leaving no stone unturned. Her wealth of knowledge transformed the dockyard into a living museum, as she shared captivating stories and anecdotes about its construction, maintenance, and significance.

Captivated by her explanations, we eagerly requested additional time to fully immerse ourselves in the space. To our delight, Deniz agreed, entrusting us with the keys to the storehouse. With an air of excitement, we ventured inside, ready to embark on our own exploration.

Armed with measuring tapes and sketchbooks, we meticulously examined every nook and cranny of the ancient structure. Our goal was to capture its essence by documenting the missing dimensions, ensuring that no detail went unnoticed. The layout, generously provided by Deniz, served as our guide, allowing us to navigate the vast space with precision and purpose.

As we ventured deeper into the storehouse, we marveled at the materials used in its construction. The sturdy wooden beams, weathered by time, told tales of resilience and endurance. The rough stone walls whispered secrets of centuries past, holding within them the echoes of countless historical events. Each element revealed itself as a testament to the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the era.

Engrossed in animated discussions, we contemplated the best way to execute Deniz's expectations and present our findings in a manner befitting the storehouse's grandeur. The weight of responsibility mingled with excitement, as we recognized the rare opportunity we had been given.

With our minds buzzing, we eagerly awaited the weeks ahead, when we would have the chance to share our discoveries with others. The time spent with Deniz had not only provided us with invaluable insights into the history of Portsmouth and the significance of the dockyard but had also ignited a passion within us to preserve and honor the stories that lay hidden within the storehouse's walls.

As we continued on our journey, we were grateful for the opportunity to embark on such a profound exploration. The storehouse had become more than just a structure; it had transformed into a gateway, connecting us to a vibrant past.

 The Journey of Crafting a Contract: A Reflection on Work-Based Learning

Embarking on my first assignment for Work Based Learning was an exhilarating experience, filled with both excitement and a touch of nervousness. My objective was to create a contract that would impress Suzanne, our mentor, as she had placed her utmost trust in our abilities. I was determined to demonstrate that we were skilled in rhetoric and capable of delivering concrete results. This blog recounts my journey through the process of meticulously examining the contract, collaborating with teammates, and ultimately presenting a polished and impactful document.
To begin with, I dedicated significant time and effort to scrutinise each and every question mentioned in the contract. Understanding the importance of thoroughness, I sought inspiration from my reference contracts and collated similar questions into a brainstorming bubble diagram. By putting myself in the shoes of an architect, an artist, and an art enthusiast, I strived to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors that needed to be addressed in our contract.

During this phase, I received invaluable assistance from my friend, Ar. Sriparvathy Unni, provided references to books mentioned in the contract. Although I must confess to not having read those books due to my inherent laziness, I made an effort to search for them. While I did not engage in extensive reading, I recognised the importance of referencing these works in our contract to bolster its credibility.

As a self-proclaimed last-minute worker, I challenged myself to encourage my teammates to take a proactive approach. I urged them to develop their own versions of the contract well before the submission deadline. This strategy would allow us ample time for revisions and improvements, ensuring the final document was of the highest quality. Through frequent Zoom meetings, we collaborated intensively, refining our contracts collectively to strengthen our overall presentation.

The day of our meeting with Suzanne arrived, and we were armed with well-prepared contracts that had been enhanced through meticulous collaboration. Suzanne, being an experienced mentor, provided us with valuable pointers and suggestions to further refine our work. It was encouraging to witness her active involvement and genuine interest in our progress. After careful consideration, my contract was selected among the four, becoming the group's contract.

As the day of the contract presentation approached, a wave of nostalgia swept over me, reminiscent of my professional life experiences. The event served as a reminder of the growth and development I had undergone throughout my journey in Work Based Learning. It was an opportunity to showcase not only my individual efforts but also the collective achievements of our team.

Crafting a contract for Work Based Learning was an eye-opening experience, demanding attention to detail, effective collaboration, and commitment to continuous improvement. Through meticulous analysis, research, and teamwork, our group succeeded in presenting a refined and impactful contract to Suzanne. This endeavour not only strengthened our understanding of contract formulation but also offered a glimpse into the practical application of our skills. As I reflect on this journey, I am grateful for the memories created and the valuable lessons learned, which will undoubtedly shape my future endeavours.

"Creating Our Own Group: A Journey of Passion, Collaboration, and Learning with Aakri Kada"

Me and three other like-minded individuals, Joseph, Krishna and Calvina decided to come together and form a group based on our shared love for the site, Store house 9. We called ourselves "Aakri Kada," which translates to "antique shop" in English.

With our excitement building, we approached our mentor, Melena, and shared our decision with her. She assigned us a fantastic tutor named Suzanne, who would guide us through the process of starting our group. Our first assignment was to create a contract that would help govern our group and ensure that everyone was on the same page.

Fortunately, I had prior experience in creating contracts during my professional career. I used my knowledge and expertise to create a draft contract for our group. To ensure that we had all the necessary elements and details in our contract, I also received help from my friend Ar Sriparvathy Unni, who is the HOD of ASADI College of Architecture.

With our draft contract in hand, we presented it to Suzanne, who was pleased with our work. She then provided us with the guidance we needed to execute the contract properly. As someone with experience in building contracts, the words flowed effortlessly, and the document took shape without any difficulty. It was a satisfying experience that left me feeling accomplished, much like Sheldon Cooper from "The Big Bang Theory" when he prepares contracts, which he is passionate about.

We got to learn so much about the site and about the history of the Dockyard from our research we did for preparing the contract. And with the right guidance and support, it's possible to achieve great things and learn from each other.

 Work-Based Learning: Discovering a Passion for History and Architecture

As a student, I have always been interested in learning about different fields and exploring new avenues. When it came to choosing between Work-Based Learning and Integration, I decided to go with Work-Based Learning since it was something that I had experience with in the past. My tutor, Melena, explained the tasks that we would be undertaking throughout the semester, and as I listened, a familiar sense of excitement filled my body.

Each site was unique and had its own story to tell. However, one site stood out to me in particular, and that was Storehouse 9. This space had been in existence for over 300 years, and as soon as I laid my eyes on it, I was in awe.

Our first site visit was with our client, Ar. Deniz Beck, gave us a detailed tour of the dockyard and explained the significance of each site. However, I could sense a spark in Deniz's eyes as she talked about the storehouse. It was not initially included in the project proposal, but I could tell that it held a special place in her heart.

I was drawn to the site and wanted to learn more about its history and architecture. As I delved deeper into my research, I discovered that the storehouse had served as a vital space for the British Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was used for storing naval supplies and even housed prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars.

The architecture of the storehouse was also fascinating, with its unique blend of Georgian and Victorian styles. The building had undergone various renovations over the years, but it still retained its historic charm.

Through my work-based learning experience, I discovered a passion for history and architecture that I never knew existed. The storehouse and its rich history inspired me to continue exploring new avenues and discovering new passions. I realised that there is so much more to learn and discover, and I am excited to see where my journey takes me.

In conclusion, work-based learning is a great way to explore different fields and discover new passions. It provides students with hands-on experience and allows them to learn in a practical setting. The storehouse 9 was a site that I fell in love with, and it sparked a passion for history and architecture that I never knew existed.
